Khalil Mack: QB Herbert shouldn’t bear the burden of loss

EL SEGUNDO, California. After Justin Herbert expressed despondency in Sunday’s 16-3 loss to the Patriots, saying he didn’t know when his first playoff win would come, Chargers veteran Khalil Mack said he wants his quarterback to stop “taking everything on his shoulders.”

On Monday, as players cleaned out their lockers to begin the offseason, Mack said Herbert’s comments were troubling given his talent and how easy it is for quarterbacks to lose. Mack said he hopes Herbert takes time this offseason to reflect on his greatness as a player.

“He wants to win. He wants to be great for us and this organization,” Mack said. “And we all want to be great for him. And he’s not alone in this. He’s not alone in this.”

Herbert completed 19 of 31 passes for 159 yards and no touchdowns. He led the Chargers with 57 rushing yards. He did not appear in the locker room Monday when the media was available.

As for Mack, Sunday’s loss resulted in another early playoff exit. Mack, the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year and one of the most decorated outside linebackers in NFL history, has lost all six playoff games in his career. Mack said he needed time to think about his future in football, but reiterated that he wanted to retire as a champion. He will become a free agent for the second time in his career.

After a 32-12 playoff loss to the Houston Texans last season, Mack considered retirement and potential first-time free agent offers, but ultimately signed a one-year, $18 million deal to remain in Los Angeles. Mack said he believes the Chargers can win a title and wants to be part of the championship here. “It feels different this time,” he said.

“Just understanding how much time you have left to play at a certain level and what’s going to happen in the future,” Mack said.

Mack was also one of the Chargers’ best players this season. He had 5.5 sacks and was arguably the team’s leading defensive tackle. The Chargers’ defense took a hit when he missed four games with an elbow injury suffered in Week 2 against the Raiders. In his absence, the Chargers have allowed 579 yards, good for sixth in the NFL. Returning for Week 7, Los Angeles finished the regular season having allowed the fourth fewest yards (1,046).

Mack said he felt the elbow injury hindered “certain elements of who I am as a player,” but he still saw the offensive line change the defense and send extra blockers his way.

“I’m going to figure it out,” he said of the future. “…I love this game. It has its ups and downs, but it helps me understand how much I need to spend to win in this league.”
